Episode 513.2: PM Trend 2025 #2 - The Great AI Letdown

Play video episode

After the initial excitement around AI, many PMs will realize its limitations due to project data quality issues and slow-moving, gradual adoption that leaves much to be desired. This “Trough of Disillusionment” (See Gartner Hype-Curve) will prompt teams to focus on better data practices and realistic expectations.

What’s Driving This Trend

The last two years have been defined by AI hype, with generative tools like ChatGPT and PM-specific applications touted as revolutionary. However, many of these tools depend on clean, structured data, which remains a significant challenge for most organizations. Without quality data, even the most advanced AI solutions fall short of their potential.

In 2025, this growing gap between expectations and reality will lead to widespread disillusionment among PMs. While frustrating, this phase is crucial for pushing organizations to address fundamental problems—such as cleaning their datasets and improving internal processes. Ultimately, the “Trough of Disillusionment” will clear the path for more practical and impactful AI adoption.

What You Can Do to Get Ahead of the Trend

  • Audit your project data and identify gaps or inconsistencies that could limit AI effectiveness.
  • Educate your project team on AI’s limitations, fostering a realistic and collaborative mindset.
  • Have your PMO build partnerships with data specialists to improve data readiness for future AI-driven workflows.
